Pedal Away, TNR is the Way. Pedal Away, TNR is the Way.

01 Pedal Away, TNR is the Way.

Wonder Penguin teams up with IAPWA Penang to make life healthier and more meaningful especially during this unprecedented world crisis. With many people having to stay at home, lives get mundane, and some of us feel helpless. With all charities hard hit by the pandemic, stray animals cause is one of the dire ones. To help save IAPWA Penang Trap-Neuter-Release program in partnership with Penang Island City Council that ended the killing of street dogs in Penang island for over 2 years now, Pedal Away, TNR Is The Way campaign is initiated. Health and wellness coach Wonder Penguin's founder (Ong Leng Hin) will cycle 5 hours non-stop on a stationary bike to create TNR awareness and start a one month online fund raising campaign for IAPWA Penang.

What is IAPWA Penang?

Independent Aid For Protection And Welfare of Animal, Penang is a registered non profit organisation under Registrar of Society with registration number PPM-006-07-24102017. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to us on penang@iapwa.org.
It's formed with the main objective to implement the Trap-Neuter-Release project in partnership with Penang Island City Council (MBPP) for a more humane and effective stray management. It launched the Trap-Neuter-Release programme for stray dogs in 1 March 2018 which ended the killing of strays caught by the island council MBPP. To date, more than 1,500 unclaimed dogs in the council dog pound were passed to IAPWA to neuter, vaccinate, rehabilitate and release/rehome.
To pay the private vets used by IAPWA Penang for surgeries, vaccinations and deworming of stray dogs caught under the Trap-Neuter-Release effort.
The practice of killings of dogs in the past was not effective as removing dogs from an area only creates vacuum for more strays to be attracted to the area, with plenty of resources continuously provided by feeders and breeding continues. Released neutered dogs will prevent unneutered dogs from coming in to breed in an area as they are territorial and stops the increase in the strays population. Scientifically, it has been shown that if an area achieved 75% to 80% of neutering rate, the stray population will initially stabilise and over a period of time reduced. If this is replicated in the whole island, it can reduce the population in long run.
Neutering is the removal of the testicles in male dogs and cats. Spaying is the removal of reproductive organs in female dogs and cats.
Released neutered / spayed dogs are given rabies vaccination as proactive and preemptive measure to protect the community and other animals. When sufficient number of dogs are given the vaccination, it can create herd immunity as protection.
Stray dogs especially puppies are given dewormer to rid them of parasites.
